The Spanish pilot Marc Marquez (32 years old), world champion this season in the MotoGP class, the seventh title in his career, was the protagonist of the Gala of the International Motorcycling Federation, he also received a special, newly established award.
The International Motorcycling Federation Gala, held in Lausanne on Saturday, December 6, featured Marc Marquez – the rider who rose from the ashes of a terrible accident in the first race of 2020 and the fears that followed.
This year, he was crowned world champion in the premier class, MotoGP, for the seventh time. Outstanding achievement, which earned him the honor of being the last one to take the stage to receive his award.
“I'm here again, I missed you”, said Marc, who also won the world title in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. “It was one of my best seasons, fighting with my brother, it was hard at home because my mother was with him“, the Ducati rider joked.
Newly established award, awarded to Marc Marquez
And it wasn't just one award for him. FIM President, the Portuguese Jorge Viegasrevealed that a special award, the Sports Trophy, has been created, which is awarded to an individual for their contribution to the promotion and growth of motorcycling, and which recognizes “excellence achieved through resilience, courage and tenacity.” And Marquez was the first to come into possession of it.
Everyone present in the hall of the SwissTech Convention Center rose to their feet to applaud and give the Iberian a standing ovation.
Surprised, the Cervera-born athlete gave an impromptu but equally emotional speech. “It is a great honor. When you start with motorcycles, you dream that one day you will go far. We all take risks. I do not want this ceremony to end without remembering those who are no longer with us. We will miss them. All pilots deserve a chance, so follow your passion and instinct“.
