In Germany, the press scrutinized the performance of Filipe Coelho's team, and the tone was by no means soft on Mainz.
The press from Germany criticizes Mainz: “The European record stops in Romania”
Kicker, one of Germany's most respected sports publications, headlined:
“Mainz's unbeaten run in European competitions ends in Romania.”
The Germans note Craiova's better start:
“Craiova had five points less than Mainz before the match. However, the Romanians started better. Mainz had problems in duels, committed many fouls, and Craiova had the first important opportunity. Zentner denied Băluță's shot.”
The publication also notes that:
“Mainz failed to create any real chances in the second half, Potulski's goal was correctly disallowed by VAR, and Filipe Coelho won the tactical duel of changes, being more inspired than the German coach.”
Another publication reacted: “A nightmare evening in Romania!”
The German website Bulinews, specialized in the analysis of Bundesliga football and German teams in Europe, summarized dryly and harshly: “A nightmare evening for Mainz in Romania.”
The publication points out that the defeat to Craiova is the first of this European campaign, and Svensson's team appeared to lack energy and ideas in the decisive moments.
How the qualification calculations for the University of Craiova look
If they finish in the top 8, they will qualify directly for the last eight of the competition. Craiova University still has Sparta Prague and AEK Athens to play.
If the Oltenians get one more victory and reach 10 points, Craiova will be sure of qualifying from the Conference group. With 8 points, they would have a huge chance to go to the play-off for the eighth. They would also have a chance with 7 points, depending on the other results.
