Virgil van Dijk (34 years old), the central defender of Liverpool, made a huge mistake in the match with PSV, in which Romanian Dennis Man (27, right wing) was also the starter.

The Dutch started the match perfectly. They opened the scoring in the 6th minute, when Perisic scored from the penalty spot. The penalty was committed by captain Van Dijk himself.

At a guest corner, Van Dijk was very close to Dennis Man and even put a hand on the Romanian international. The ball reached that area, and the captain of the “Cormorants” made an inexplicable blunder.

He jumped with one hand on Man and the other up, and the balloon hit him right in the palm. “Central” Hernandez immediately dictated the penalty. Despite the fact that the penalty was an obvious one, Van Dijk protested vehemently. In vain, however, the referee maintained his decision, and Perisic opened the scoring.

Virgil van Dijk has been trashed in the Dutch press

The Dutch saw the stopper's blunder and marveled at it. “Virgil van Dijk's bizarre action drives PSV fans crazy: the Dutchman has gone completely crazy,” wrote the journalists at sportniews.nl.

They also scored: “PSV came out of the dressing room much better than the home team. They got an extra boost from Virgil van Dijk's clumsy move. The Dutchman had his arm raised above his head at a corner and palmed the ball away.

Van Dijk claimed he was slightly pushed by Jerdy Schouten, but he was the main culprit. The captain of the Dutch and the Liverpool team was so easily eliminated by the player of PSV. Surprisingly, Van Dijk did not receive a yellow card. He got one shortly afterwards for a rough tackle on Ismael Saibari.”
