US President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday that he had sent Steve Witkoff and Dan Driscoll to talk with Russia and Ukraine, based on an “optimized” draft peace plan that had input from both Moscow and Kiev.

In a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, Donald Trump claimed his team had “made tremendous progress on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine” over the past week, again saying the war “would never have started” with him in the White House. The US president said that “25,000 soldiers died last month”.

“The original 28-point peace plan that was developed by the United States has been refined, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement. In hopes of finalizing this peace plan, I have assigned my Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with President Putin in Moscow, and at the same time Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will meet with the Ukrainians,” said Donald Trump.

Trump, who said he would be “briefed on all progress,” also talked about the prospect of a meeting with his counterparts in Ukraine and Russia.

“I look forward to meeting, hopefully, with President Zelensky and President Putin soon, but only when the agreement to end this war is final or in its final stages,” President Trump said.

A Ukrainian official told Reuters on Tuesday that Ukraine supports the essence of the peace plan resulting from talks with the US in Geneva, but that some of the most sensitive aspects of the framework remain to be addressed by the presidents of the two countries. The leaders of the “Coalition of the Will” held a videoconference meeting on Tuesday, in which both the Ukrainian leader and the head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, participated.
