Folk calendar

Erema – stay at home

On this day, the memory of two holy martyrs is celebrated – Nikander, Bishop of Mir, and Presbyter Ermey.

In Rus', it was believed that on this day one must definitely stay at home, if possible, not even go out into the yard, and even more so beyond the fence. Otherwise, you could encounter evil spirits and incur various troubles. “The outskirts are ghostly on this day,” people said. The weather matched the general mood: “It’s twisting, muddy, messy outside the threshold.”

It was also believed that evil spirits on Yerema (Ermeya) tried to penetrate the hut themselves in order to steal hot coal from the stove. Therefore, it was customary on this day not to give fire to any of the neighbors, so that happiness would not leave the house. Moreover, the family asked: “Svetets, hold the torch tightly so that not a single soot is stolen from the hut by evil spirits.”
