French police arrested a man armed with a knife on Friday at the Montparnasse train station in Paris, according to the announcement made by prosecutors, Reuters reports.
The prosecutor's office issued a statement saying that an officer used his “weapon” to intervene in the case of the man, who then began to injure himself with the knife. French media reported that at least one gunshot was heard.
A police source told Le Figaro that the man is 44 years old, a native of the Wallis and Futuna islands and wanted by the authorities for threatening his wife and children with death.
The man got off a train and put the knife to his throat when law enforcement arrived to arrest him. According to Le Figaro sources, the individual tried to attack other passengers before injuring himself.
“From the first information we have, it appears that a man known for domestic violence displayed a knife and a police officer used his weapon to stop him,” the Public Prosecutor's Office told French media, as quoted by Local France.
“The man would then have stabbed himself,” prosecutors said.
A Reuters photographer who was in the station at the time of the incident said that the police intervention caused people to gather in the station lobby.
Police then evacuated the station, which serves high-speed trains heading to the west and southwest of the country.
