A judge launched an open letter to Nicușor Dan and Ilie Bolojan: “To achieve your absolutely miserable goals, you are ready to burn everything”

Judge Adriana Stoicescu, former president of the Timiș Court, launched an open letter addressed to President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, in which she accuses the increasingly frequent attacks by politicians on magistrates, saying that they aim to discredit the judiciary.

“From my position as a humble servant of the Romanian State, I am addressing you, in desperation for the cause, a public message. And I am telling you that I am afraid. A morbid fear, which paralyzes me and leaves me breathless. It is time to ask you to stop! I have tried by all legal means, in all ways, so limited, to speak and draw attention”, writes the judge in the message posted on Facebook.

The magistrate says that, because of the increasingly aggressive political discourse, judges live in fear, being “hounded and threatened”, and in recent years, the pressure on the judicial system has steadily increased.

“And I and, here, more and more colleagues, chased and threatened. To tell the truth, at any risk. To point the finger, first of all at us. Today I find out that, in the next few days, I should be afraid to go out on the street. For about 10 years I've been somewhat afraid of people. I think 10 times before going out to a cafe because I don't know if I won't be recorded when I complain about the volume de muncă. Şi tot “am muşcat-o”…. Am renunţat să merg la petreceri sau la nunţi. (…) Avem probleme în justiţie, ştiu. Aşa este. Multă mizerie, ascunsă, sub preş, de ani mulţi. Aşa este. Tăcere prea multă, uneori complicitate morală, vezi “partenerul de nădejde al DNA”, printre altele. Aşa este. Delăsare în a ne face curăţenie în propria ogradă ? Poate. Dar, de aici până la a ne turn into the “cancer of the country”, the “plague of society” is a long way, don't you think? In fact, all you and your fellow politicians want is to completely destroy the independent judiciary”, accused the judge.

Adriana Stoicescu claims that the current political class would aim to weaken the independence of the judiciary, citing “instrumentation of public opinion”.

“To achieve your absolutely miserable goals you are ready to scorch everything, put targets on our backs and take us to the arena, because if there is no more bread, the circus must continue. Everything you do has been done before. It started with some yellow marks on the clothes, to be precise. Not long ago, on the scale of history… For me, nothing new, I had survivors in the family… I am tired. Me too and many of my colleagues. We should leave, as the voice of the people demands, let us be stoned to death, in the name of cosmetic justice, as you wish. The stake of all your actions is to turn this country into a colony that, by its status, does not need justice. writes Adriana Stoicescu, drawing a parallel with historical persecutions.

At the end of the letter, the magistrate states that “Timișoara has been dead for a long time.”

The letter comes amid a conflict between magistrates and the Government, after Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu recently declared that “magistrates' pensions are paid from the money of the sick and poor children”.

The statement caused a wave of reactions in the judicial system, and the CSM filed a criminal complaint against the deputy prime minister.
