Donald Trump threatens the BBC with a billion-dollar lawsuit. The film caused a storm

Director General of the BBC Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday amid allegations that a segment of the documentary in which Trump speaks before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol was edited in a way that falsely suggested that Trump encouraged protesters to storm the Capitol. Yesterday, Trump sent a letter to the BBC with the following demands:

What controversy surrounded the BBC documentary?

Who resigned from the BBC?

What demands did Trump send to the BBC?

Until when did Trump give the BBC time to meet his demands?

  • Retraction of the documentary and any other similar statements.
  • apology for these statements.
  • “Adequate” financial compensation for the damage caused.

The clock is ticking: in the letter, Trump warns that if the conditions are not met by Friday at 23 Polish time, the president's lawyers will file a lawsuit for “not less than” $1 billion.

Even if the BBC agrees to a settlement, it could still be costly. Trump has sued multiple media outlets since retaking the presidency last year. and reached settlements with ABC television ($15 million) and Paramount Skydance studio ($16 million). His lawyers also reached a settlement with social media platforms YouTube, X and Meta after suspending his accounts for a total amount of almost $50 million.
