Five German climbers, including a 17-year-old girl, died and two others were injured in an avalanche on Saturday near the summit of Cima Vertana in Trentino-Alto Adige, northern Italy, Italian alpine rescue services said.according to News.ro.

The avalanche, which occurred on Saturday afternoon at an altitude of approximately 3,200 meters, affected two groups of German climbers who were climbing the Ortles massif, in northern Italy, not far from the border with Switzerland.

“The first group, consisting of three people, was completely buried under the snow,” and the three climbers died, the Italian alpine rescue services said.

From the second group, consisting of four people, two climbers who managed to get to safety survived. Injured in the avalanche, they were “transported to hospitals in the region”, stated in a video the president of the alpine rescue service in Alto Adige, Alberto Covi.

On Sunday morning, the bodies of the two people who were still missing, a father and his 17-year-old daughter, had been found, Italian alpine rescue services added, whose search had been hampered by worsening weather conditions.

The two people were “taken and taken down the stream where the avalanche occurred”, they added.

Italian alpine rescue services also warned of snowfall expected in the coming days at altitudes above 2,400 meters in northern Italy, as fresh snow will settle over harder crystals that have recently formed due to falling temperatures.
