Doug Martin (36 years old), former star in the NFL, the American football league in the United States of America, died following an altercation with the police, who were called after the former player had entered a neighbor's house at night.
Doug Martin, a player in the NFL from 2012-2018, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders, died on Saturday, October 18, after a bizarre incident in which he was involved. The ex-footballer broke into a neighbor's house, who called the police. An altercation ensued between the officers and Martin, and the former NFL star lost consciousness and later died at the hospital.
Police Department: “After being taken into custody, Martin lost consciousness”
Here's what the Oakland Police Department said, according to ESPN:
“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a residential burglary in Oakland. As police officers tried to detain him, a brief scuffle ensued. After being taken into custody, Martin lost consciousness.
Paramedics arrived at the scene, provided medical aid and transported Martin to a local hospital where he later died.”
Meanwhile, an investigation into the altercation between the police and Doug Martin has begun to find out what led to the blackout. Athletes First, the former player's agency, revealed that he had been struggling with mental health issues.
“He faced mental health challenges that profoundly affected his personal and professional life. Doug's parents were actively seeking medical attention for him and contacted local authorities for support“, reported Athletes First.
“Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug left home during the night and entered a neighbor's home, where he was taken into police custody. An investigation into what happened while he was in custody is ongoing,” the agency added.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee also said:
“Doug left an indelible mark on the history of our club. We mourn Doug Martin, a fellow citizen who had a brilliant NFL career and who died under tragic circumstances on Saturday morning. Our condolences to the family and loved ones.”
