Israel has taken action after Indonesia announced that six gymnasts from Israel, including Artem Dolgopyat, Olympic Vice-Champion and World Champion, will not receive a visa for the Jakarta World Championships (October 19-25). The Sports Arbitration Court (TAS) has received two appeals and will decide in an emergency in this case.

Indonesia announced last week that it will not give a visa to the six gymnasts in Israel, who were to participate in the Jakarta World Championships. The reasons are related to the continuous attacks of Israel on the Gaza Strip, but also to the long -term policy of the most populated Muslim country in the world to refuse to host Israeli sports delegations at major events on its territory.

The Israeli gymnastics federation called this scandalous decision and filed two appeals in TAS, demanding the receipt of its gymnasiums at the world competition that debuts on October 19, and if not, its move or cancel.

Eyal Indig, Artem Dolgopyat, Olympic champion in Tokyo and vice-champion in Paris on the ground, but also world champion, Ron Pyatov, Lihie Raz, Roni Shamay and Yali Shoshani were the six Israeli to evolve at the World Championships in Jakarta.

Indonesia was prepared for such an appeal

“The Indonesian government remains consistent in rejecting the visa applications of the Israeli Gymnastics team and is prepared to face the call to TAS”said Erick Thohir, Minister of Youth and Sport in Indonesia.

The official added: “This decision follows the clear indications of President Prabowo Subento, who firmly stated that Indonesia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until it recognizes an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.”

The minister also revealed that the Government has anticipated the legal appeal of the Israeli Federation and will respond in the legal framework of both Indonesia and the international sports body. “We will face this appeal with dignity,” he said.

The Sports Arbitration Court will make a decision on October 13 or 14 on this situation.
