According to the church calendar, the day of St. Theophan the Merciful is coming.
Among the Russian people, Theophan was nicknamed the Gracious not only in memory of the good deeds of the saint. Usually on the day of his memory, warmth returned to the earth. “The monk is covering us with his caftan,” people said. At night they went out to look at the stars: if there were many of them in the sky and they shone brightly, they waited for a dry autumn. They said about the starry sky: “We have a basket full of turnips under our window.”
On Feofan, hunters walked through the powder, hunting for the birthday hare. If this was successful, the day ended with a feast, during which hunting stories were told.
