US President Donald Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize if he manages to convince his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to give up the use of force against Taiwan, Taiwanese President Lai Ching Te in an interview in the US, Reuters reports.
The United States is the most important international supporter of Taiwan, the island returned by China, despite the lack of official diplomatic relations with Taipeiul. However, since President Donald Trump returned to the White House earlier this year, he has not announced any new weapons sale contract to the island state.
Trump could meet with XI at a summit of leaders in the Asia-Pacific region, which will take place in South Korea later this month.
President Taiwanese Lai, who spoke this week in the show The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show -broadcast by over 400 US radio stations -referred to Trump's August comments, in which he said that Xi would have told him that China would not invade Taiwan as long as he is the US president.
“We hope to continue to benefit from President Trump's support. If President Trump will convince Xi Jinping to give up any military aggression against Taiwan, President Trump would undoubtedly be a Nobel Peace Prize,” Lai said.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he deserves this distinction, which was previously granted to four of his predecessors at the White House. This year's winner will be announced in Norway on Friday.
Some countries have announced their support for its “candidate” this year, including Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 8 that his country will nominate Trump at the Nobel Prize, for his efforts to mediate a Hamas armistice. Netanyahu handed him to the American leader, during a dinner at the White House a copy of the letter sent to the Nobel committee by which the nomination was made.

Taiwanese President's warning for Trump
Asked what the US president would tell if he had the opportunity to meet him, Lai said he would advise Trump to pay attention to XI's actions.
“I would advise him to pay special attention to the fact that Xi Jinping not only carry out increasing military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, but also extends his military forces in the East China Sea and the South China Sea,” Lai said, according to his statements published by Tuesday.
Several hours after the transcript was published, the Ministry of Defense in Taiwan announced that it has noticed a new increase in Chinese military activities, with 23 aircraft and military drones that carried out a “common patrol for fighting” around the island, together with Chinese war ships.
China's increasing military activities, carried out further by their own shores, are not a challenge for Taiwan, Lai said.
“This challenge exceeds the simple annexation of the Taiwan. Once the Taiwan had annexed, China would gain greater force to compete with the United States on the international scene, undermining the international order based on rules,” he said.
“Finally, this will affect the internal interests of the United States. Therefore, I hope President Trump will continue to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” he stressed.
As there are no official diplomatic relations between Washington and Taipei, Taiwanese presidents cannot meet or talk to the Americans.
The United States, which are obliged by the law approved by the Congress to provide the necessary means to defend the necessary means, have long maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity”, avoiding clearly whether they would react in the case of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
