The Slovenian prosecutors asked the court to open a judicial investigation against the liberal prime minister Robert Golob based on the accusations that he had mixed in the police staff, the prime minister's office said on Friday.
The case is based on an accusation that a former interior minister against Golob has made in 2022, and now the court must decide whether the prime minister will be charged.
“An application for an investigation against a person (…) for criminal accusations for offering gifts for illegal mediation was filed,” said the specialized state prosecutor's office for AFP on Friday, in an e-mail in which he did not mention the name of the prime minister.
The request to open a judicial investigation was filed on Thursday, the cabinet said in a statement, adding that Golob will “cooperate fully” if he goes on with the investigation.
Golob's lawyer, Stojan Zdolasek, had said that the request against his client is “unfounded” and that he is expected to be rejected by the court in Ljubljana.
Former Interior Minister Tatjana Bobnar, who resigned in 2022 five months after taking over the position, accused Robert Golob of asking for the police chief to make a “cleaning” in the institution.
Bobnar claims that the prime minister's request was aimed at police officials appointed to or loyal to the previous conservative government, who was led by Janez Janza.
Robert Golob rejected the accusations repeatedly.
Golob, a company manager in the field of energy, has obtained a parliamentary majority in the 2022 elections, taking over the position of prime minister in Janza, an admirer of US President Donald Trump.
