Denmark is facing a dramatic increase in the number of plastic surgery procedures, directly related to the large-scale adoption of Wegovy, the popular weight loss medicine launched in December 2022, writes the website nyheder.tv2.dk.
New data from the Danish authority for medical data show that skin correction surgery have increased vertiginously, abdominoplasts and lifts of the face and neck almost doubled between 2020 and 2024, while the corrections of the breast area increased by almost 60%.
This trend is an unprecedented change in terms of the demographic number of patients requesting cosmetic surgery, determined by the rapid and substantial weight loss obtained through this medicine.
Over 200,000 Danes have tried Wegovy since its placing on the market, creating a new category of surgical patients with excess skin following a dramatic weight loss.
Plastic surgeons from Top Aleris and AK Nygart private hospitals report a clear pattern of patients who openly discuss the use of weight loss drugs when requesting surgical consultations. The typical patient's profile has appeared to be women between the ages of 25 and 40, although an increasing number of men also request procedures, including male breast reductions.
What problems do patients face with
The medical need behind many of these procedures extends beyond mere aesthetics. Patients frequently face functional problems due to skin left, which falls, including moisture retention, unpleasant odors and significant mobility problems during physical activities such as running or other sports.
A specialist plastic surgeon, Dorte Lyhne from Aleris, emphasizes that the dramatic body changes caused by fast weight loss create a more pronounced skin compared to the methods of gradual weight reduction, requiring surgery for both comfort and health.
The economic and logistical reality of these procedures has created a model in which patients are usually subjected to several surgery over long periods, rather than complex individual operations. Most begin with abdominal or mammary procedures before returning for additional works on arms or legs, as different problem areas become more problematic over time. Both financial constraints and health considerations influence this stage approach to bodily contouring surgery.
Plastic surgeons anticipate that this trend will continue to grow significantly before reaching a plateau. Mikkel Børsen Rindom from AK Nygart predicts that the phenomenon will have an impact on the industry in the coming years, describing the current levels as just the “beginning” of what Denmark will experience.
This expectation is based on the mechanism of the drug – Wegovy maintains its effects of weight loss only during administration, and the appetite returns to the interruption of administration, which could create continuous cycles of weight fluctuations and surgical correction needs.
Significant increase highlights a wider transformation of the demand for cosmetic surgery, which exceeds traditional procedures, such as “mother -type transformations” after pregnancy, to include a new market, in the style of medical tourism, determined by pharmaceutical interventions.
