During the performance at the UN General Assembly, Trump said that Khan is a “terrible, terrible mayor,” and that he supposedly wants to introduce the laws of Sharia in London. The mayor of London, in response, called Trump “racist, sexist, mizogin and Islamophobe.”
Starmer in an interview noted that there are many points on which he agrees with the US president, but their opinions do not coincide on the mayor of London.
“The idea of introducing the laws of Sharia is absurd. And Sadik Khan is a very good mayor, and it really reduces the level of serious crimes,” the British prime minister emphasized.
Starmer added that the inhabitants of London are proud that in their multinational city the mayor is a Muslim.
Context
Trump is not for the first time publicly offended by politicians. In particular, in 2019, Trump called the khan a miserable loser and invited him to pay attention to a high crime rate in the British capital. Khan called Trump's tweets addressed to him by the behavior of an 11-year-old child.
The difficulties in their relations with Trump began back in 2015 after Trump's statement on the complete ban on the entrance to the United States to Muslims when Khan was not the mayor of London. He was elected to this position in 2016. After that, Trump said that he would make an exception for the khan.
