Why Mitriță is not a loss

Article by Adrian Duţă – published Wednesday, September 24, 2025 7:52 pm / Updated Wednesday, September 24, 2025 21:15

The news that Alexandru Mitriță has retired from national is already old. Reactions flow, however. And they will do it for another, maximum two days. Then the tranquility will be laid, we will forget that Mitriță has given up the national, as quickly as we will ever forget that he has ever played under “tricolor”.

Because 4 goals in 26 matches and zero contributions to any performance cannot turn you into a memorable international, about which the general public to remember over 15-20 years.

And the fact that you, from the reserve position, at just 30 years old, are making a withdrawal letter, is just an altitude. Or just an attempt to look like the victim of the system. The reality is, however, another, despite the dumbbells from Oltenia. Mitriță is not a loss for the national of Romania, for 3 reasons.

1. Romania had results without Mitriță

The former player at Craiova University debuted in 2018 at the national team. He withdrew in 2025, and in the 7 years in which he was in the circuit he was constantly convened, without being a basic man.

The only time it was not taken into account at all, in the mandate of Edi Iordănescu, the national team has had the best results in the last 15 years.

Starting with the Euro 2024 preliminaries until after the final tournament, Alexandru was not called to the lot. Without him, Romania qualified from the first place in the group at the European Championship, without defeat, taking 4 points with Switzerland, the series head at the draw.

Then, at the final tournament, the national team led by Edi Iordănescu, perhaps the most sub -prescribed coach in history, obtained the qualification in the optimal. He won the group again, ending over Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine.

And then, before the euro, Bănie came to the selected selected, who “dared” not convene Mitriță. The results showed that Iordănescu Jr. was right.

2. Not even Mircea Lucescu could make a team player

Why Mitriță is not a loss

Alex Mitriță will no longer be presented under Lucescu's command

“He has personality, attitude, you must know how to behave with him, without accusing anyone. We are poorer after his departure.” It is not about Gheorghe Hagi, nor about Gică Popescu, nor about Adrian Mutu or Cristi Chivu.

But about Alexandru Mitriță, extreme with 4 goals in 26 matches, 3 of them scored with the Faroe Islands, Lithuania and Armenia.

And the words belong to Mihai Rotaru, the shareholder of Craiova University and Mitriță's godfather. Without accusing anyone, with the subjectivism of rigor, he blames Mircea Lucescu for Alexander's decision.

The coach, dissatisfied with the player from Zhejiang, sent him to work. To put in the service of the team, as does the winner of the Golden Ball, Ousmane Dembele, who turned into a PSG pressing machine.

Mitriță did not agree and chose the easy way. To give up and remain the player for whom the status of a star matters more than the performance of the team whose shirt wears.

Coincidence or not, Craiova has qualified for the first time in the group of conference League and is a leader in the Superliga without Mitriță. But with workers, listening to the coach and put the team first.

3. Romania has multiple solutions on Mitriță's post

Valentin Mihăilă, Florinel Coman, Ștefan Baiaram, Alexandru Dobre, Denis Drăguș, Florin Tanase are all players who can evolve in the left band in the Romanian team. Not here is the problem at the national team, Mircea Lucescu has enough solutions to appeal in the absence of Mitriță.

In fact, with Mihăilă and Coman law senators on the far left, the national team obtained the big results from 2023 and 2024.
