The change in US President Donald Trump's approach to Ukraine is probably washing his hands from this war. Meanwhile, Kiev's situation is difficult, Ukrainian democracy is becoming fragile, and there is a lack of soldiers on the front. Europe must intensify help – says the weekly “Economist”.

On Tuesday, Trump expressed the belief that Ukraine with the support of the EU is able to regain its territory in its original form. “After getting acquainted with the military and economic situation of Ukraine and Russia, and after its fully understanding and after seeing the economic problems that results in Russia, I think that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is able to fight and gain all of Ukraine in its original form,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social social platform. Finally, he added that Ukraine “can even go on!”.

Commenting on this statement, the British weekly writes that in practice this means that Ukraine must face Russia only with the support of European allies, hoping that the White House will not take a hostile position towards it.

In addition, he estimates that counting on the fact that Ukraine will be able to regain all territories occupied by Russia, even with the help of Europe, is “fantasy”. However, if “the White House is not hostile”, Washington will continue to support Kiev consisting in sharing intelligence and allowing the purchase of American weapons, then Ukraine should be able to defend itself.

“The dream of a prosperous, safe and democratic life on four fifth (former territory of Ukraine – PAP) will survive. And this would be a kind of victory,” the weekly forecasts.

However, he points out that Ukraine is struggling with serious problems not only on the front. Her economy, under the pressure of constant Russian attacks and with a shortage of hands to work, was in poor condition. What's more, the Ukrainians are frustrated with certain moves of President Volodymyr Zelanski, who too much consists only of a narrow group of advisers and tolerates corruption when it is convenient – says “Economist”.

Europe should therefore intensify help for Kiev, pay bills for American weapons and to a delicate way to support Ukrainian democracy – he recommends. Before all, however, he must remember that he cannot allow Ukraine to fall, because the consequences of Kiev's defeat in the war would be “too scary to even take them into account” – emphasizes the weekly.

And he adds: “Imagine a great country at NATO's borders under Vladimir Putin, bitter and betrayed, full of weapons and angry former soldiers.” (PAP)
