Latvia Reports Unidentified Airspace Incursion Near Belarus and Russia

Latvian military officials reported an incursion by an unidentified object into national airspace on Sunday, close to the borders with Belarus and Russia, according to Reuters.
During the alert, the military advised citizens to remain indoors as a precautionary measure.
“We inform you that there is a threat in the airspace… If you see an object flying at low altitude or a suspicious object, do not approach,” the military stated in a post on platform X.
The alert concluded after approximately 30 minutes, when the military announced that the unidentified object had left Latvian airspace.
Ukrainian military drones have accidentally entered the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania multiple times.
While Ukrainian forces target Russian ports on the Baltic Sea used for oil transport, some of their drones have missed their targets, triggering security alerts in neighboring countries. In Latvia’s case, this contributed to the fall of the government in the spring.
Moscow has accused Kyiv of using NATO airspace as a cover for attacks, while Kyiv asserts that some of its drones have been diverted by Russian jamming.
NATO countries generally blame Russia for these incidents, as it initiated the war by invading Ukraine in February 2022.
This incident in Latvia follows a similar event in Romania, where on Saturday, six counties—Iași, Neamț, Vaslui, Botoșani, Bacău, and Suceava—were affected by an air alert due to two drones entering national airspace.
