Elina Svitolina Addresses Divorce from Gael Monfils as He Withdraws from Tennis

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina, 32, has publicly addressed the impact of her recent divorce from French player Gael Monfils, 40. This decision has significantly affected Monfils, leading to his immediate withdrawal from professional tennis.

The couple, married since 2021 and together since 2019, share a daughter named Skai. Following their announcement of separation, Svitolina took to social media to clarify her previous messages, emphasizing the complexity of her decision and the emotional turmoil of living amid a prolonged conflict.

“I want to clarify my previous post, as not everyone, especially the international audience, fully understood my intent. I shared only one of the reasons influencing my decision, and truthfully, it is much more complicated than that. After living through the realities of war for over four and a half years, one’s perspective inevitably shifts, leading to a reevaluation of what truly matters in life. It is never easy to reach a decision like this, and I deeply respect and love my husband. But some things are too personal to share publicly,” Svitolina stated on Instagram.

Monfils’ Withdrawal Linked to Svitolina’s Decision

According to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), Monfils has been placed on the list of players who have withdrawn from competition, having dropped out of anti-doping protocols and no longer eligible to participate in official tournaments. Reports indicate that this decision followed Svitolina’s announcement of their marriage ending, leaving Monfils in a position where he found it impossible to continue competing due to the emotional strain of the separation.

Emotional Impact Hits Monfils Hard

Media outlets have described Monfils as being particularly sensitive, struggling greatly with high-pressure situations. His recent divorce has overwhelmed him, even causing him to cancel farewell tournaments in Lyon and Paris. Reports characterize the news of their separation as a shock that left Monfils feeling detached from the sport.

Monfils’ Secret Retirement from Tennis

Monfils stepped away from tennis a few days ago, well ahead of an anticipated official retirement scheduled in three weeks in his hometown of Paris. Despite the absence of any negative connotations, the unexpected nature of his withdrawal surprised fans who expected a grand send-off from the former world number six.

The ITIA has recorded his retirement date as October 6, marking the US Open as his last competition. Monfils has not publicly commented on his decision; it was initially revealed by tournament organizers in Lyon, who stated he declined a wildcard due to personal reasons.

It is now clear that personal challenges significantly influenced Monfils’ choice to end his tennis career sooner than planned.
