Ukraine is set to deploy its indigenous missile defense system, FREYJA, by December, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The announcement comes as Russia produces approximately 140 ballistic missiles each month. To effectively counter this volume, NATO guidelines suggest that Ukraine would need to possess at least 280 interceptors, doubling the number of incoming missiles.
Acquiring even 100 interceptors monthly poses significant challenges for Ukraine. The country aims to receive between 100 to 120 Patriot missiles through stockpiles and production from the United States, as well as assistance from European nations and partners in the Middle East during the colder months ahead.
Simultaneously, Ukraine collaborates with companies from ten different countries to develop the FREYJA missile defense system. The core components of this system include the launch platform and the missile itself, which are already produced locally.
