Ukrainian Man’s Extradition Hearing Delayed Amid War Crime Allegation

Court hearing scheduled for September 4

The court session related to the possible extradition of a Ukrainian citizen from Croatia to Germany has been postponed.

Lawyers stated that the updated warrant and the addition of a new classification signify a fresh phase in the defense’s efforts to secure the rights of the Ukrainian individual. However, the specific incident that the German authorities have classified as a war crime remains unspecified in the company’s statement.

Zhuraĺov was detained in the Polish town of Pruszków at the end of September 2025. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs had described him as a hero. On October 1, he was arrested for a week, and on October 6, a Warsaw court extended his detention by 40 days. The District Court of Warsaw rejected the German special services’ international request for his extradition and released him from custody. The publication “GORDON” has been gathering information about Zhuraĺov.

Context

  • On the night of September 26, 2022, underwater explosions and gas leaks were recorded on the “Nord Stream” and “Nord Stream 2” gas pipelines, which run under the Baltic Sea. Defense ministers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland labeled the incident a sabotage, with traces of explosives found at the site. An investigation in 2024 was halted without naming any culprits. Germany issued arrest warrants for seven Ukrainians suspected of involvement in the explosions.
  • Illegitimate president of the aggressor nation, Russia, Vladimir Putin, claimed that the damage to the “Nord Stream” and “Nord Stream 2” pipelines was orchestrated by Western countries, with the U.S. being the main beneficiary. Western nations deny any involvement in the incident. The Ukrainian president’s office believes that the sabotage of the pipelines benefited Russia and denies any connection to Kyiv.
