New Details Emerge on Russia’s Secret Biological Laboratory

Recent intelligence has uncovered a secret biological laboratory located on a secluded island in Russia, heavily secured by FSB and FSO units, as well as military garrisons and air defense systems. Established in 1938, the complex fell into disrepair after the USSR’s dissolution but underwent extensive renovations in 2022 under orders from President Vladimir Putin.
According to military intelligence representative, the old structures were demolished and replaced with modern laboratories designed for handling biological samples and chemical substances. Historical reports from the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s identified this facility as a potential site for biological weapons development.
“From the onset of the facility’s operation, it has attracted scrutiny from foreign intelligence agencies,” stated the representative. Currently, the facility is formally under the auspices of the Federal Medical Biological Agency of Russia, but in practice, it operates in alignment with the interests of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The renovation of this lab coincided with the expansion of the 48th Central Scientific Research Institute near Moscow, which Ukrainian intelligence associates with biological weapons development. Funding for both projects was allocated through a single program.
The lab is officially tasked with researching animal diseases, such as brucellosis and tuberculosis, although a recent job posting for a lab technician highlighted responsibilities involving pathogenic biological agents classified from I to IV groups. According to Russian classifications, group I pathogens include the agents responsible for highly dangerous and lethal infections, such as plague, Ebola, smallpox, and anthrax.
“Why would they need a specialist for a lab that claims to study animal diseases?” questioned the representative. The facility is protected by multiple security measures, including military forces and electronic warfare capabilities.
The intelligence official warned that any potential accident at this facility could have widespread consequences, with the risk of chemical substances contaminating water sources and harming local ecosystems. An outbreak of pathogens, he noted, could lead to even more severe repercussions.
He also speculated that a reported outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Russia in the spring of 2026 could be linked to activities at this laboratory, although he cautioned that this remains only a hypothesis.
