According to Politico, Poland has taken a definitive stance on the issue of NATO nuclear deterrence. The country supports involvement in this strategy but does not wish to host nuclear warheads on its territory.
Polish official Zalewski stated, “Poland does not want nuclear warheads on its territory. We want to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence, which does not imply the presence of nuclear warheads here,” during a press conference at NATO’s headquarters in Brussels.
Zalewski added that Poland is interested in increasing the permanent presence of American troops within its borders. He also referenced a statement from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the potential deployment of an additional 5,000 American troops in Poland.
Previously, Poland expressed its willingness to play a larger role in NATO’s nuclear deterrence but has consistently denied plans to host American nuclear weapons. In June, Zalewski highlighted the seriousness of the issue due to its potential political implications.
Moreover, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has not dismissed the possibility of the country developing its own nuclear program.
