A soldier recovering from injuries, Vitaliy Shumey, celebrated his 38th birthday with a significant gift from the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation: a home where he can continue his rehabilitation. Reports indicate that this support has been crucial for Shumey as he engages in daily sessions with specialists to enhance his physical condition.
Shumey’s father, Serhiy Fedorovych, shared updates on his son’s progress, stating, “We are starting to communicate, we’re beginning to stand during verticalization, and his memory is returning. His arms and legs are showing improvement, and he is now able to pull them up. He receives constant attention from physiotherapists and massage therapists. Soon, he will be able to stand, but there are still issues with his eyesight. Recently, we visited Lviv, where the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation helped us with examinations and medication, and now he can differentiate between day and night. I am very grateful for the ongoing support we receive.”
Ksenia Sukhova, the General Director of the Foundation, remarked, “We are pleased to see the soldier’s progress. Rehabilitation is a lengthy and gradual process, where not only medical procedures matter but also consistent activities and psychological support. Each achievement, from improved mobility to the ability to stand independently, is a significant step towards greater self-sufficiency and a return to an active life.”
In honor of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the Foundation organized a meeting for Shumey with Mykhailo Chaplya, a defender of Mariupol and a post-traumatic growth trainer from the NGO “Heart of Azovstal.”
Chaplya personally prepared a special pie, named “Pie of Independence,” at his burger shop in Lviv and brought it to Shumey as a gift for the national holiday. “I baked this pie until three in the morning. I am very happy that Vitaliy’s recovery is progressing positively, and he is even joking now. I follow the story of the Shumey family, which inspires people to remember humanity,” said Chaplya.
He expressed his wishes for Shumey’s continued strength and resilience, emphasizing the importance of support during recovery from injuries.
