Lazio has initiated discussions with Mauro Icardi regarding his potential return to Serie A, as reported by Sky Sport Italia. The 33-year-old Argentine striker is currently a free agent after his contract with Galatasaray came to an end.
Lazio is actively searching for a new central striker, but they are constrained by a limited budget, leading them to focus on players who are available on free transfers without high financial demands.
The club has already reached out to Icardi’s representatives to understand his financial expectations. However, a significant hurdle may be Icardi’s desire to wait for an offer from a Champions League club. Still, he could be persuaded to reconsider if promised regular playing time.
Icardi boasts an impressive record in Serie A, having scored 121 goals and provided 31 assists across 219 matches. His current market value is estimated at €4 million, according to transfermarkt.com.
After suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in November 2024, Icardi managed to net 16 goals in 47 appearances for Galatasaray last season.
The Argentine international has a rich history in Italian football, having joined Sampdoria from Barcelona’s youth academy in 2011, later transferring to Inter in 2013 for €13 million, and moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.
Bringing Icardi on board could be a strategic move for Lazio, who are looking to rebound following a challenging season. The team finished ninth in Serie A, missing out on European competitions, and was defeated 2-0 by Inter in the Coppa Italia final.
Lazio’s first match of the new season is scheduled for August 16 against Mantova, a Serie B team, in the Coppa Italia, while their Serie A debut will be on August 24 against Bologna.
