Darius Olaru, 28, made his mark during his third official game for Union SG, scoring a stunning goal in their 5-1 victory over Westerlo in the Belgian league.
Unlike his previous appearances in the Super Cup against Brugge and a Champions League match versus Bodo/Glimt, Olaru started the Saturday evening match on the bench. He was brought on in the 68th minute and scored with a volley from outside the box in the 84th minute, marking his goal on a rebound that struck the ground before entering the net.
Belgian media highlighted this achievement, noting, “Darius Olaru’s first goal. The Super Cup winners witnessed another new signing, following Mofokeng, scoring in the Belgian competition. After a cross from Louis Patris, the ball fell to Olaru, who struck a volley from the edge of the area, beating Jungdal for the fifth time.”

Two other publications, DH Les Sports and Le Soir, commented on his performance. DH Les Sports rated Olaru 7, stating, “Like Guilherme, he came on in the 68th minute and unleashed a beautiful volley to make it 5-1.” Meanwhile, Le Soir awarded him a score of 6, noting, “Like Guilherme, he scored a superb goal with a left-footed volley.”
Currently leading in Belgium, Olaru and Union SG are preparing for an upcoming European clash. On Tuesday evening, the Belgian vice-champions will face Bodo/Glimt in Norway, aiming to advance in the Champions League playoffs after the first leg ended in a 3-3 draw.
