Zelensky Directs Special Sanctions Operation Against Russia

Zelensky: Each participant received clear tasks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has tasked officials with formulating a specific sanctions operation targeting the Russian military industry. During a recent meeting, he emphasized the need to prevent Russia from adapting to existing sanctions.

Zelensky stated, “I have instructed the team to prepare a clear plan for a special sanctions operation that should significantly restrict the Russian military industry – targeting specified companies in determined areas. Each participant in the meeting received clear assignments. I expect full compliance.”

The President pointed out that critical components of foreign production are present in every Russian missile, drone, and most other types of weaponry, without which Russia would struggle to produce such arms.

Additionally, the meeting addressed Russia’s use of foreign machinery and technology. Zelensky commented that Moscow is lagging “by generations” in this regard and is incapable of independently creating a range of necessary technologies. He indicated that increased international pressure is needed to limit the aggressor country’s access to these resources.

Context

  • On June 25, Zelensky reported the approval of a 40-day operation by the Security Service of Ukraine, aimed at influencing the aggressor state to hasten the end of the war.
  • On August 4, the Security Service reported its outcomes, noting over 100 successful strikes on strategic targets, including defense industry enterprises, airfields, air defense systems, oil refineries, military logistics, and vessels of the “shadow fleet.” The agency also stated it had damaged over 21,000 units of military equipment and infrastructure belonging to the invaders and eliminated nearly 5,000 Russian troops.
