Romanian Football Struggles Against Nordic Teams: A Decade of Defeats

In the past decade, encounters with teams from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and more recently, the Baltic states, have become a significant challenge for Romanian football clubs. This trend has been further emphasized by recent defeats against Auda, Brann, and Tromso. Players from these clubs, including Alin Fică and Alex Chipciu, have expressed a shared sentiment that Nordic teams hold considerable superiority over their Romanian counterparts.

The string of eliminations faced by Romanian clubs at the hands of teams like Rosenborg, Bodo/Glimt, Djurgarden, HJK Helsinki, Brann, Auda, and Tromso, alongside the national team’s disappointing performances, indicates a decline in Romanian football’s competitiveness against northern European foes.

There have been exceptions, however. FCSB managed to eliminate Viking in 2022, and they also secured a victory over RFS in the 2024 Europa League group stage. Notably, Farul eliminated Flora Tallinn in 2023, and in 2020, CFR Cluj triumphed over KuPS, who are currently facing Craiova in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
