German Police Arrest Ukrainian Suspected of Sabotage Planning at Arms Factory

German authorities have detained a 33-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of espionage against an arms manufacturing company in Bavaria. The arrest occurred on Sunday, according to a joint statement from the Munich Prosecutor’s Office and the police in Thuringia, where the suspect was apprehended.

The suspect reportedly recorded video footage of the arms factory in June, allegedly to facilitate sabotage actions on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. Described as a “low-level agent,” he is believed to have shared these recordings with a handler representing the intelligence agency.

While the authorities did not disclose the specific country involved, they noted that in September 2025, German officials launched a campaign warning that Russia was recruiting “one-time use agents” online.

Germany on High Alert

The suspect is currently in preventive custody at a Bavarian prison. The investigation is being led by a newly established national center aimed at coordinating defense against hybrid attacks, inaugurated in June.

Germany has heightened its alert in response to the increasing frequency of destabilization, sabotage, and espionage operations attributed primarily to Russia. The German Interior Minister has indicated a “new dimension of danger” for the country, referencing a possible “hybrid attack scenario” after the discovery of an explosive drone at Leipzig Airport, a key logistics hub for NATO and the transport of military and civilian equipment to Ukraine.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022, Berlin has been actively supporting Kyiv.
