Anghel Iordănescu, the former coach of the Romanian national football team, attended the match between FC Voluntari and UTA Arad on Saturday evening, alongside his son, Edi Iordănescu. After the game, he reflected on the recent performances of Romanian teams in European competitions.
This week brought new disappointments for Romanian football. Universitatea Craiova was knocked out by Levski Sofia in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, while FCSB and Universitatea Cluj were eliminated from the Conference League after facing Auda (Latvia) and Brann (Norway), respectively.
The only Romanian team to advance is CFR Cluj, which qualified for the third qualifying round of the Conference League after defeating Alashkert from Armenia.
Anghel Iordănescu: “Craiova Particularly Failed to Deliver”
Iordănescu expressed that he expected more from all Romanian representatives, emphasizing that Universitatea Craiova disappointed him the most.
Despite FCSB’s elimination by Auda, a team valued at only €5.55 million by Transfermarkt, Iordănescu pointed out that Craiova missed a significant opportunity to progress.
“Unfortunately, they did not deliver at all, with the exception of CFR Cluj. What I regret is that the teams from which I expected more, especially Craiova, did not convince either through their play or their results,” Iordănescu stated, according to reports.
Universitatea Craiova was eliminated by Levski Sofia after losing 0-1 in the first leg in Bulgaria and drawing 2-2 in the return match at Ion Oblemenco Stadium.
Currently, Universitatea Craiova and CFR Cluj are the only Romanian teams still competing in European tournaments. The Romanian champions must face KuPS Kupiö in the third qualifying round of the Europa League, while CFR Cluj will take on Tromsø in the third round of the Conference League.
