Spain has found an unexpected ally in Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, a populist leader known for his stance against immigration. On Friday, Fico expressed his belief that excluding Spain from the Schengen area would not be the right solution, while also offering assistance to the Spanish government, according to reports citing The Guardian.
In an extensive English-language post, Fico stated: “I am closely monitoring the developments of the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave in Africa. Today, I have also joined the initiative of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, calling for a strong response from EU institutions. The government of the Slovak Republic has long asserted that the most effective way to prevent illegal migration is through rigorous protection of the external borders of the Schengen area.”
He further emphasized that “everything possible – even what may seem impossible – must be done to prevent illegal migrants from entering the territory of EU member states without authorization.”
