Poland Will Assist Ukraine with MiG-29 Upgrades Under Conditions

Poland has expressed a willingness to support Ukraine in upgrading its MiG-29 fighter jets, contingent upon Ukraine or its allies covering the costs. This statement follows reports of progress in an agreement that will see Ukraine receive Polish MiG-29 aircraft. According to Polish official Michal Kosiniak-Kamysz, there are now more positive developments compared to just a few days ago.
In late June, Kosiniak-Kamysz had stated that Ukraine had not adhered to an earlier agreement regarding the transfer of these aircraft. However, he announced in early July that negotiations to transfer Soviet-era MiG-29s, which were previously part of the Polish military arsenal, have recommenced.
Kosiniak-Kamysz described the agreement as achievable but emphasized the importance of reciprocity in the deal. He highlighted Ukraine’s significant capabilities in drone production, noting that the country has been selling drones to the Middle East.
Addressing concerns from Ukraine about the technical condition of the Polish MiG-29s, the Polish minister reiterated openness to discussions regarding modernization. He stated that Poland could assist with upgrades insofar as possible, but reiterated that the financial responsibility for such improvements would fall on Ukraine or allied nations.

- In December 2025, the Polish Ministry of Defense announced the potential transfer of six to eight MiG-29s to Ukraine, which were to be retired from the Polish armed forces. Discussions also included exchanging aircraft for access to certain drone technology.
- In mid-June 2026, Deputy Minister of National Defense of Poland, Cezary Tomczyk, noted that the delivery of MiG-29s to Ukraine would only be possible after signing a bilateral agreement on technology exchange between Warsaw and Kyiv.
