Romanian Players Set for UniCredit Iași Open with Quarterfinal Clash Possible

Jaqueline Cristian, ranked 37th in the WTA, is the top seed at the WTA 250 tournament in Iași, alongside fellow Romanian players Gabriela Ruse (ranked 71st) and Miriam Bulgaru (ranked 248th), all of whom have discovered their first-round opponents.

The UniCredit Iași Open marks Romania’s second WTA 250 tournament, transitioning from grass courts to clay. Matches will kick off on Monday, featuring three Romanian athletes directly in the main draw.

The draw took place at the Ciric Sports Base, the venue for the tournament, while the first semifinal of the ATP Challenger event was held on the Central Court. Cristian and Bulgaru actively participated in the draw alongside Iași’s Mayor Mihai Chirica, license holder Andrei Oriță, and WTA supervisor Mihaela Testiban.

Cristian and Ruse, seeded first and sixth respectively, are positioned in the upper half of the draw and may potentially face each other in the quarterfinals. Bulgaru, who received a wildcard entry, will compete against an opponent emerging from the qualifiers, which are set to conclude on Sunday, July 11, and Monday, July 12.

“I want to thank the organizers for their care towards us. I hope for a great week for me and for Romania, as it is important to have a WTA 250 tournament on clay in our calendar to grow and develop our tennis,” Cristian stated.

“I hope for a successful week with exciting matches, and I encourage fans to come out in large numbers. I draw a lot of energy and motivation from the crowd and the love from home. Please come and support us,” she urged.

Jaqueline Cristian: “The Draw is Very Balanced and Strong”

“This tournament is becoming a tradition. We expect a large audience, and we have a lineup featuring names that have been significant in the past and will be in the future. Players like Anhelina Kalinina, who was ranked 25th last year, and Nadia Podoroska, a former semifinalist at Roland Garros, are participating. We assisted her with a wildcard due to her injuries, and we hope to support her on her return,” noted tournament director Daniel Dobre.

Following the draw, the Romanian players expressed their thoughts on the bracket.

“The draw is very balanced and strong. The upper part seems a bit tougher. Andrei took great care in the selections. I think he wanted some exciting matches and that’s what we will have,” Cristian remarked, smiling as she pointed out Oriță’s choices.

“Ultimately, we are here to enjoy ourselves, put on a show, and give our all on the court. So, we await you all!” she emphasized.

“Yes, it’s a very strong draw. I’m eager to see who I’ll be playing against, and there are tough competitors in the qualifiers too. But we are here to enjoy and give our best, especially on home ground with a large audience. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone,” Bulgaru reiterated.

Sorana Cîrstea and Irina Begu Withdraw Due to Injuries

Two of Romania’s top players from the past 15 years, Sorana Cîrstea and Irina Begu, initially listed to participate, have had to withdraw. Cîrstea is sidelined with abdominal muscle issues, while Begu has fractured two toes on her foot.

“I want to address the withdrawals. It has been a difficult week for us coinciding with the organization of the men’s tournament. Both Sorana and Irina are injured and, unfortunately, cannot attend. Additions to the lineup also include last year’s finalist Jil Teichman and Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska,” Oriță explained.

“We managed to secure a prominent name, albeit not at her highest ranking, but Paula Badosa, a former number 2 in the WTA, just won her tournament in Bastad,” he added.

Our goal is to attract as many tennis lovers as possible. Even if they don’t love tennis per se, they might enjoy sports or beauty in general, and they should come and participate alongside players, organizers, and tennis enthusiasts. I am confident that this will grow year by year,” said Mayor Mihai Chirica.

In the qualifiers starting Sunday, July 12, six Romanian players will compete: Carla Todoni, Maia Ilinca Burcescu, Irina Fetecău, and Ilinca Amariei, who received wildcards, along with Maria Sara Popa, Eva Maria Ionescu, Andreea Prisăcariu, and Carmen Herea.
