Budanov Warns of Escalation Risks in Poland Relations

Ukrainian official Kyrylo Budanov has forecast a significant rise in tensions in relations with Poland, expected to peak in the coming week. He attributes this escalation to historical events that are resurfacing in discussions.
Reports indicate that Poland is planning actions that could exacerbate existing tensions. Budanov has made it clear that Ukraine will not accept any ultimatums from its partners. He stated, “The last group to attempt to issue us an ultimatum was the Russian Federation. With no offense to Poland, it is somewhat less powerful than Russia. We rejected their ultimatum, and thus, it is illogical to think we would accept one from another party. Engaging us through ultimatums is simply not productive.”
According to Budanov, Ukraine does not intend to take preemptive actions. However, he warned that if Poland takes unfriendly steps, Ukraine will not remain silent. He believes that escalations can lead to two outcomes: either an unavoidable catastrophe or a reduction in tensions. Budanov hopes that the situation with Poland will ultimately trend towards de-escalation.
Context
- The Volhynian Tragedy, referred to as the Volhynian Massacre in Polish historiography, involved mutual ethnic cleansings during World War II, conducted by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) on one side and the Polish Home Army and other Polish formations on the other. The exact number of victims from both sides remains unknown, with estimates suggesting 25,000 to 100,000 Poles and several thousand to 24,000 Ukrainians were killed.
- This historical interpretation remains one of the most complex issues in Ukrainian-Polish relations. In 2016, the Polish Sejm recognized the Volhynian Tragedy as genocide. In response, the Ukrainian parliament issued a statement labeling the Polish Sejm’s resolution as an incorrect assessment of the tragic events.
- On July 4, the Center for Counteracting Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine warned that Russian security forces plan to release falsified documents regarding the Volhynian Tragedy to incite political disputes between Warsaw and Kyiv.
