Serena Williams Prepares for Emotional Return to Wimbledon After Four Years

Serena Williams, the 44-year-old tennis legend, is gearing up for her return to the Wimbledon singles competition. Ahead of her debut on the grass courts of London, she expressed her excitement and expectations for her first Grand Slam appearance in four years.
As a seven-time champion at the All England Club, Williams admitted she initially hesitated to accept the wild card invitation from the organizers, but now she is eager to step back onto the Centre Court.
Serena Williams Shares Unique Expectations for Wimbledon Return
On Tuesday, she will face Australia’s Maya Joint, ranked 53rd in the WTA, in the first round of the tournament. This match will mark her first singles contest at Wimbledon since the 2022 edition, where she was eliminated in the opening round.
A winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, Williams concluded her professional career in 2022 after the US Open. However, she returned to the circuit this month, competing in doubles at Queen’s and Berlin.
During a press conference in London, she remarked, “For the first time in my career, the expectations are completely different. I feel like I am truly going to enjoy being here.”
Williams confessed that the emotions have not faded, even after a legendary career.
“I expect to be emotional. I’ve had emotions before every match in my life. I think that shows how much I love tennis, whether it’s the first round or a Grand Slam final. I’ve always felt that tension before a match, but then I calm down and focus on the game,” said the former world No. 1.
In addition to her singles match, Serena will also compete in the doubles event alongside her sister, Venus Williams. When asked what message she hopes to convey through her return, she emphasized the importance of pursuing one’s dreams.
“Athletes live for moments like this. I have the chance again to do what I love most. Ultimately, I told myself that this is an incredible opportunity, and I have to take advantage of it. Perhaps people will understand something from this return, but above all, I believe you must trust yourself and follow your dreams, no matter how crazy they seem.” – Serena Williams
