Andres Cubas Misses US Matches Due to Bizarre Passport Mishap

Andres Cubas, a 30-year-old midfielder, began his professional career at Boca Juniors on May 11, 2014, the day he turned 18. He made a name for himself at the club while also progressing through the youth ranks of the Argentine national team, but ultimately opted to represent Paraguay.
The international player, who has already participated in two matches at the World Cup, shared an amusing yet frustrating incident that prevented him from entering the United States.
Bizarre Incident for Andres Cubas Before the World Cup
Cubas, who stands at 1.66 meters tall, represented Argentina at the U20 World Cup in 2015 alongside players like Angel Correa, Giovanni Simeone, and Emiliano Buendia.
Now, 11 years later, he plays for the Canadian team Vancouver Whitecaps in another World Cup, this time for Paraguay. He has earned 34 caps for the national side since obtaining Paraguayan citizenship in 2019, which allowed him to represent his father’s homeland and much of his family. Cubas has become a key player for the national team but missed two friendlies for an unusual reason.
He was called up for friendly matches against the United States and Mexico on November 15 and 18, 2025, respectively, but was unable to travel to North America.
The reason? Cubas accidentally left his passport in a pair of pants that were put in the washing machine by his housekeeper.
“I forgot my passport in a pair of pants that went through the wash. By the time I realized, it was no longer in good condition. It was unfortunate,” the player told abola.pt.
Andres Cubas immediately attempted to obtain a new passport but was unable to complete the visa process in time to represent his national team in the friendly matches in the United States. Seven months later, there was no room for forgetfulness as he is now part of the squad for the World Cup.
