Ivano-Frankivsk Mayor Discusses Language Patrols and Ukrainian Promotion

In Ivano-Frankivsk, Mayor Ruslan Marcinov has shared insights on plans for the establishment of language inspectors, set to begin their work in fall 2024. This initiative arises in response to a noted increase in the use of the Russian language within the city. Marcinov aims to enhance the presence of the Ukrainian language, particularly through social advertising.
The mayor expressed that this was a community-driven initiative that has already shown positive effects. “We distributed flyers promoting Ukrainian language courses, stickers, social advertisements, billboards, and city lights. I want to emphasize that we have seen a resurgence of interest in the Ukrainian language. Our language courses, both online and offline, are thriving, with many people enrolling and learning. We believe we have reversed the trend, making this a successful initiative,” he explained.
Following the earlier concept of language patrols, Marcinov noted that the city’s approach has shifted to include relevant stickers, educational materials, and language courses. Currently, approximately 90% of residents in Ivano-Frankivsk communicate in Ukrainian.
Marcinov emphasized that efforts are focused on promoting the Ukrainian language in public spaces, particularly in institutions like the Central Administrative Services Center, rather than in private settings. He believes that the government should take a more active role in promoting the Ukrainian language through continuous courses and outreach efforts. Acknowledging the challenges, he remarked, “While it may be difficult to change the older generation’s habits, it is essential to work with children and the youth to ensure they view the Ukrainian language as their native tongue. This situation may sound strange in a Ukrainian state, but it reflects our current reality,” he concluded.
