The first Russian athlete with a donor heart conquered the top of Mount Beshtau in Pyatigorsk. 38-year-old Valentin Tkachev ran 16 kilometers and rose to a height of 1401 meters above sea level.
Valentin Tkachev from Vidnoye received a fatal diagnosis in 2017. His heart stopped working at full capacity: instead of the daily norm of six liters, it pumped only 700 mg of blood. Doctors prescribed medication to keep the ventricles functioning.
But after five years of constant medication use and regular hospitalizations, Valentin found himself between life and death. Cardiac function dropped to 16%. I only had enough strength to sleep and eat. The transplant was done at the Shumakov Institute. Tarasov spent more than 10 hours on the operating table.
With a new heart, Valentin began a new life. He went on a diet, lost almost 50 kg and began walking every day. At first 4 km a day, then more and more. There was little walking. I ran.
By the time of the climb to Beshtau, a year and a half after the transplant, the athlete already had a dozen marathons in his anamnesis. But it was this height that became special. Together with Valentin, his attending physician also conquered the mountain. At the top they hugged.
Now Valentin Tkachev plans to take another height – to become a professional athlete.
