Viktor Orban, re-elected as the head of Fidesz with overwhelming support of the delegates after the election failure

The ultra-nationalist Hungarian politician Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary from 2010 to May 2026, was re-elected on Saturday as president of the Fidesz party, in the first congress of this political formation after the clear defeat suffered in the legislative elections in April in front of the conservative Tisza party, reports EFE, according to Agerpres.

Viktor Orban, 63, told party delegates gathered in Budapest that he would “never” give up and that while Fidesz is not a successful political party at the moment, it will have to rebuild and renew itself in the coming months.

Although some critical voices were heard at the Fidesz congress, the only candidate for the leadership of the party was Viktor Orban, who in the end received the support of 729 of the 737 delegates, HirTv television reported.

At the end of April, Orban offered to resign as his party's president after the disastrous result in the parliamentary elections, but the Fidesz leadership rejected this proposal.
