The reduction of EU quotas for steel imports will cost Ukraine more than €1 billion in export revenue– Financial Times.
From July 1, the European Union plans to cut steel import quotas by 47%. Formally – through global overproduction and in order to protect their own. But Ukraine is also under attack, despite the war and the free trade agreement with the EU.
In 2025, Ukraine exported 2.65 million tons of metal products to the EU. Now the European Commission offers a quota of only 713,000 tons – that is, minus 70%.
“This will completely kill the opportunity of Ukrainian companies to supply products to the European market,” the newspaper writes.
There are almost no alternative markets for Ukrainian manufacturers. In other directions, Ukrainian steel is losing competition to Russia and Turkey due to significantly more expensive electricity and war.
The European Parliament is calling for a separate regime for Ukraine. MEP Karin Carlsbrough said that Ukraine, as a candidate country for the EU and a state at war, should receive “very special treatment”.
