“Bloodbath”. Cuba's president responds to Donald Trump's allusions

“Threats of armed aggression against Cuba from the world's greatest military power are now widely known,” Diaz-Canel wrote on social media. “The threat itself constitutes a crime in the international arena. Its implementation would trigger a bloodbath with unimaginable consequences and would destroy peace and stability,” he added.

Tensions between the United States and Cuba have escalated during Donald Trump's second term. Washington is pursuing a policy of “maximum pressure” towards the island, wanting to force a regime change.

Trump has repeatedly suggested he intends to take complete control of the island, telling reporters in March that Venezuela was just the first step.

— Take over Kuba, that is, whether I release her or just take her, I think I could do anything I wanted with herif you want to know the truth, Trump said. — I believe that I will have the honor of regaining Cuba. That would be good. It's a huge honor.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Reports of hundreds of drones

Axios reported on Sunday that some intelligence officials believe the island's authorities have purchased more than 300 military drones and are in talks to launch attacks on the US base at Guantanamo, warships and even Key West, Florida. This intelligence could be used as a pretext for a U.S. strike against Cuba.

POLITICO has not confirmed the details of this report, and the Cuban embassy in the United States suggested in a statement Sunday that it's a false excuse to attack the island.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Havana last week for talks with top Cuban officials.
