Deaf and mute convicts in several Moscow pre-trial detention centers were allowed to call home using a payphone so that they would not be bored. This is how the investigator responded to complaints that watching TV without subtitles is not very good.
The first vice-president of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf (VOG), Evgeniy Bezrukov, and the vice-president of the Tatarstan branch of the organization, Venus Gaulston, complained about unsuitable TV in the isolation wards. They were detained on February 20, 2024 for selling government buildings at a reduced price in Vologda, Kazan, Lipetsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk and the Kaliningrad region – damage amounted to 211 million rubles.
Human rights activist and member of the Public Monitoring Committee Maria Botova said: deaf and mute people asked to set up channels with a sign language interpreter or subtitles. The judicial and investigative authorities accepted the appeal, but in the end they simply allowed me to call my relatives. And not via video link (where sign language is possible), but for some reason on a payphone.
