Journalist of The Wall Street Journal Evan Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in prison in a maximum security colony for espionage. The decision was made by the Sverdlovsk court. Gershkovich did not admit his guilt.
The court ruled that in March 2023, on instructions from the CIA, the journalist collected secret information in the Sverdlovsk region about the work of Uralvagonzavod, where military equipment is produced and repaired.
Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg on March 29 last year. Then the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the correspondent was caught red-handed.
