Osasuna and Barcelona met on Saturday night, in the 34th round of La Liga, and the Catalans won 2-1 in a match that “exploded” only in the last 10 minutes.
Although the score suggests a spectacular duel, the reality on the field was different: for almost 80 minutes, the game was a close one, with few chances and a lot of fighting in midfield. However, the final made up for the lack of pace, with three goals and an outcome that can be decisive in the title fight.
Osasuna posed serious problems to the leader
The first half confirmed the difficulties of the leader. Barcelona failed to create any big chances, while the hosts were the more dangerous team. Osasuna had two shots on goal and even hit the crossbar, while Joan Garcia's interventions were essential to keep the “white” score.
Barcelona looked bereft of ideas in attack, relying almost exclusively on set-pieces. Even after the break, things did not change radically. Osasuna continued to be more present in the opposing half and ticked off some more dangerous actions until the 75th minute, while the Catalans could not find solutions in the open game.
Explosive end: Lewandowski and Ferran decide the match for the Catalans
Everything changed in the 81st minute. In the first really dangerous action, Marcus Rashford's excellent cross was met by Robert Lewandowskiwho restarted flawlessly with his head and unlocked the scoreboard.
The goal completely opened the game. shortly after Ferran Torresintroduced along the way, widened the gap after an excellent filtering pass from Fermin Lopez, finishing coolly.
The hosts did not give in and reduced the difference by Raul Garciaafter a well-constructed phase on the flank, but the comeback came too late to change the fate of the game.
The victory takes FC Barcelona to 88 points and brings them decisively closer to title number 29. The Catalans now await the misstep of rivals Real Madrid, who have 74 points and a game in hand.
If Madrid fail to win against Espanyol on Sunday night, the title could be decided this weekend.
With four rounds remaining, Hansi Flick's team is in a great position: even in the scenario where Real Madrid wins, Barcelona can mathematically become champions next stage, even in El Clasico.
The Catalans have won 10 consecutive championships and seem unstoppable at the end of the season. On the other hand, Osasuna ranks 10th, two points behind Getafe, a team in the European qualification position, but with one more game to play.
