Surgeon at the Krasnoyarsk Regional Hospital Daniya Gilaeva spoke about the hernia anterior abdominal wall and explained how to spot it in time.
A hernia of the anterior abdominal wall is exit of internal organs (usually intestinal loops or omentum) outside the abdominal cavity through weak spots. Usually this is the linea alba, the umbilical ring or the inguinal canal. Less commonly – Spigelian line and femoral ring.
The main sign, according to the specialist, is a visible protrusion. It may appear when coughing, lifting heavy objects or straining and disappear when lying down. You should also be alert to aching or nagging pain in the lower abdomen or groin, which intensifies with physical activity, as well as bloating, constipation and discomfort after eating.
In the early stages, a hernia may not manifest itself in any way, and a person lives with it for years, not paying attention. But at any moment, infringement can occur – the organ is compressed in the muscle gate, the blood supply is disrupted. This acute condition with severe pain, nausea and vomiting requires immediate surgery.
The surgeon usually makes the diagnosis during examination. To clarify the details, CT or MSCT is prescribed. Treatment is only surgical. Neither pills, nor bandages, nor traditional methods relieve a hernia.
The modern standard is tension-free plastic surgery with a mesh implant. The defect is covered with a polypropylene mesh, which grows with connective tissue. Relapses are rare, and rehabilitation is faster than with the outdated method of stitching tissue.
The operation is performed open or laparoscopically through punctures. Treatment is carried out according to compulsory medical insurance in the second surgical department of the regional hospital. Doctors advise not to wait and go ahead as planned – emergency surgery for strangulation is 5-10 times more dangerous.
