Lazio qualified for the Coppa Italia final after beating Atalanta on penalty kicks (2-1). After regular time and overtime, the score was 1-1 (in the round: 2-2).
Maurizio Sarri's team opened the scoring in the second leg from Bergamo with Atalanta. It was the 84th minute when Romagnoli crossed the ball over the goal line. But the advantage of the Romanians lasted only two minutes. Pasalic equalized and took the semi-final to extra time, but failed to score again, so the 2025-26 Coppa Italia runner-up went to a penalty shoot-out, where Lazio goalkeeper Edoardo Motta was decisive.
Atalanta bogged down in front of Edoardo Motta
Atalanta started well, converting through Raspadori, while Lazio missed the first two penalties (Tavares, Cataladi). But then the situation changed 180 degrees. The hosts wasted the next 4 shots, Scamacca, Zappacosta, Pasalic and De Ketelaere failing to beat Motta (21)while the Romanians recovered spectacularly and scored through Isaksson and Taylor. Final score: 1-2.
Weighted as always in his statements, Maurizio Sarri referred after the final whistle to what he would like his team to correct in the game until the final against Cristi Chivu's Inter. “I would ask my players to get to the opposition goal quicker. This is where we have been lacking since the start of the season. We have become a more solid team, but we are not scoring too quickly.”
Maurizio Sarri: “Motta is impressive on penalties”
Sarri then praised his goalkeeper: “Motta? He's impressive on penalties. He saved 4 out of 5 tonight, one at Bologna, basically 5 out of 6. He still has potential, especially in his footwork. A guy with potential, a top player, has to have the desire to keep improving.”
The Inter – Lazio final will be played on Wednesday, May 13, from 22:00, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. This will be Inter's 16th appearance in the final act of the Coppa Italia. The Nerazzurri have won nine trophies, the last being against Fiorentina in 2023.
