Although he was supposed to be in the main draw of the second 1,000-point clay-court tournament of the season, Novak Djokovic decided not to risk it and withdraw before the tournament started. Just a few days before the start of the tournament, the Serbian announced that he has physical problems and is not sure if he will be able to play. This was confirmed on Friday after the Serbian posted a message on social media.

“Madrid, unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year's tournament. I am continuing my recovery to return soon. Soon!”was the message posted by Novak Djokovic

This decision comes almost two weeks after the Serbian also withdrew from the tournament in Monte Carlo. It is a hand injury that forced him not to participate in the Miami Open either.
