The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday announced sanctions against more than 20 people, companies and ships it says are involved in exporting Iranian crude oil and natural gas, CNN reports.
All of these entities are part of a network led by Mohammed Hossein Shamkhani, whose father was a top political adviser to assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and was also killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, the Treasury Department said.
The sanctions cover nine ships, crude oil and liquid gas tankers, as well as several companies based in the United Arab Emirates.
The announcement came a day after the Treasury Department announced it would also restore sanctions on all Iranian oil after temporarily granting Tehran a one-month license to sell crude lying on tankers.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent today signaled U.S. readiness to impose further sanctions, saying he was prepared to impose “secondary sanctions” on countries that buy Iranian oil.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has imposed sanctions on parts of Shamkhani's vast shipping empire. In July, it announced a much broader set of sanctions against more than 115 people, entities and vessels in its network.
