Jannik Sinner (24) won the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 title in the first final played in the Principality after 7-6 (5), 6-3 over arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz (22). The Italian collects the third title in a row in this category and ensures his return to the first place of the world ranking.
It took a little more than three months to have an inaugural duel between Alcaraz and Sinner in 2026, the world's top two players already winning titles without having to face their fiercest rival.
In the end, the inevitable appeared on the clay of Monte Carlo, where the Spaniard and the Italian reached the final act on identical routes. They lost one set each, coincidentally, in the round of 16. Otherwise, low-key excitement as the game gradually unfolds in this first clay-court contest of the season for each of them.
On a cloudy day, with a maximum of 20 degrees, Carlos and Jannik resumed the duel on the red surface in the Principality, temporarily stopped after the historic final at Roland Garros 2025. From the stands, Prince Albert II watched with interest, with him and many important tennis figures, Adriano Pannatta, Stefan Edberg, Holger Rune, Radek Stepanekamong others.
A safe first service game for the ATP leader started the final, followed by a quick break. The Italian seemed to need a few shots in a row to get his bearings, while the Iberian took a few grains of his fantasy out of his pockets.
Immediately, however, Jannik stepped into his role as a perfectly tuned central unit, to hundredths and millimeters, stifling the creative impulses of a slightly stretched Alcaraz. Thus the balance was restored, with a break recovered and the plot glued together.
“It's a completely different matchup mentally because Alcaraz can do things others can't“, said Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Coco Gauff, before the final, referring to the semi-final in which Sinner faced Zverev. At the same time, he also noted that “sometimes, Alcaraz has small lapses in concentration. Something he can't afford in front of Sinner“.

He predicted, also correctly, that the Spaniard would resort to short “in the hardest moments” Indeed, when other weapons hesitated, the brief executed so precisely, so inspiringly, brought the Iberian to shore.
His service games were a bit more complicated, with a break point saved at 2-2. Beyond the net, Sinner operated precisely, economically, slicing up the field with his long, almost impossible-to-control shots, the contrast between them feeding the wide-eyed spectacle.
5Jannik Sinner's 6-chance break points save Carlos Alcaraz in first set to tie-break
“You have to expect a great balance“, said Fabio Fognini, Monte Carlo champion in 2019, prefacing the final for Gazzetta dello Sport. And the balance on the table was the only word that could describe the first set, which reached the tie-break, beyond the small fluctuations within the games.
Only there, in the decisive game, could the knot be untied. Focused, Sinner didn't get off the line until, surprisingly, he was ready to put the last point at 6-4. In the end, he made it easy for Carlos with his third double fault of the set. A 7-6 (5) set that lasted one hour and 14 minutes. Each of Saturday's semifinals only had a few extra minutes in total.

Jannik Sinner, unbeatable on the clay of Monte Carlo
What was next? More balance or a dizzying scrolling? However, something was accentuated from the first minutes: a small wave of frustration from Alcaraz, tempering coach Samuel Lopez with a:Por eso hay que seguir” (therefore I must continue).
In the short term, the urge worked, with the Spaniard making a break. In the Italian's lodge, the father, Johnand his brother, MARKOSthey cheered him on their feet. But then, the scenario of the first act was repeated. Sinner recovered. Alcaraz got lost in the thicket of options tested in turn, but without the same accuracy from other matches.
Exactly what did not happen on the other side of the net. When Jannik identified his opponent's crisis patterns, he made no more mistakes. He recovered the break. He did one more. to 5-3 served for the match, for a historic title in Monte Carlo.
And got it, 6-3with the same clear, focused playing, with its balance and strength in the most important moments. What a success! What a series for Jannik, who, next to Indian Wells and Miami, puts the third title in a row in Masters 1000 tournaments. The positive consequence can also be seen in the ranking: the Italian returns to the first position of the world ranking, from where Alcaraz had dethroned him after the US Open 2025!

“Incredible!” Alcaraz told Sinner at the end at the net. “Always a pleasure” replied the champion. “A great jobadded the Spaniard. Yet another example of how high-profile rivalries can get out of whack once the match is over. Then only the people remain.
